If you are here, you have probably either asked for a letter of recommendation or are considering asking for a letter of recommendation. I very rarely write letters of recommendation and I want to mention why and how to get an elusive letter from me.
1) I am currently an adjunct (part time) professor. This means my letter of recommendation holds very little weight. It can hurt you more than help you.
2) In addition, I only hold a MS degree (or 7 of them) when most professors hold a PhD. If you are applying to graduate school, they want doctoral level faculty.
3) Most of what I teach is asynchronous distance courses, I probably don’t really even know what you look like. This is a problem with online courses. I simply have less interaction to say much of anything. Plus I have no way of proving that your work is yours.
Now… there are ways to get a letter of recommendation from me. Since I am pretty useless writing as a professor, especially a distance one, I would be better served writing as a supervisor. I will consider writing if you
- Performed research with me… actual research outside of class.
- Published with me.
- Presented with me.
- Worked with me in a clinical setting as a trainee.
- Worked at any of my companies or non-profits.
